…no need to waste it…now an image of young Mary Tyler Moore throwing her hat in the air is going to be stuck in your head all day!
But what I really want to talk about is ROMANCE!
First of all, what does ‘romantic’ even mean? When I think of a romantic, the first thing that pops in my mind is Pepe le Pew, that amorous little skunk who falls in love with everything from a bunny to a cat, as long as it somehow, conveniently has a white streak painted down it’s back. Deus a machina. Let’s face it; some of us are just desperate to be in love.
Why?
But how did this notion of romance survive all these years of human evolution, societal changes and now with pornography so easy to access, just what is it about romance that makes us still crave it? Well first of all; it feels good! It colours everything pink and blue and purple and gives us the warm-fuzzies. It makes us feel life is a wonderful adventure and not just drudgery. Is it any wonder I want you all to feel some romance in your day-to day?
Romance by definition is;
1.a novel or other prose narrative depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits, etc., usually in a historical or imaginarysetting.
2.
the colorful world, life, or conditions depicted in such tales.
3.
a medieval narrative, originally one in verse and in some Romancedialect, treating of heroic, fantastic, or supernatural events, often in theform of allegory.
4.
a baseless, made-up story, usually full of exaggeration or fancifulinvention.
5.
a romantic spirit, sentiment, emotion, or desire.
6.
romantic character or quality.
7.
a romantic affair or experience; a love affair.
Phew and that’s just the noun! So it’s an old term, and most of us associate it with chivalry, men fighting duels over the object of their affection, and the aforementioned skunk. But romance and having it in your heart and soul can be a very enriching state of being. It can heighten and colour your life and the world you live in. So are you romantic and if not, can you become so?
There’s an old expression; “take time to stop and smell the roses”
Well that in itself is a romantic notion and one I believe in firmly. It simply means to relish the wonderful things around you. That’s easy to say, hard to put into practice though. I watched a heart-breaking video on Youtube a few years ago of Joshua Bell playing violin in a Washington D.C. subway station and though passed by over a thousand people, only 27 stopped to listen. 27. Now we are talking about some of the most beautiful, uplifting, emotional music in the world, played by one of the most popular, sought after violinists. What are we rushing to that we can’t enjoy that? These moments, each day, that is our life. Not the things we plan for but just the pearls that are thrown at us. So open your eyes and try to catch some of them. John Lennon said “life’s what happens when you are busy making other plans” so true, but be careful you don’t miss it!
If you are currently in a relationship, take some time every day to really appreciate that person. And money is not even close to being an issue here. I am talking about really looking at them and really being thankful for them. I woke my man up with a thousand kisses this morning. I really took time to make small, soft, kisses all over his face and neck and back, just to wake him up with joy and a feeling of being appreciated. Now that is romance!
If you are dating or looking, maybe using a chat line to find local singles, really take time to fill yourself up with the people you encounter. Really see what is special about them instead of ticking your internal checklist; “good ass, check. Straight teeth, check”
When you see what is real and beautiful in the world, you will feel more satisfied with your life. Don’t yearn for what you don’t have and may be potentially unobtainable. Appreciate and love what is right in front of your eyes. Mostly, see yourself with those same eyes. Love who you are and the world around you and romance will fill your soul and light up your life.
Peace and love kiddies.
